Reading Your Brand's Pulse: Seven Vital Signs That Reveal Whether Your Social Media Is Thriving or on Life Support

At The Social Clinic, we don't do vague pep talks. We do diagnostics. And like any decent GP will tell you, the sooner you spot the warning signs, the easier the treatment.
So we've built our own version of a health check — seven vital signs for your social presence. Run through them honestly. If three or more come back abnormal, your brand needs an appointment, not a quick plaster.
Vital Sign One: Engagement Rate
The reading: Divide total engagements by reach on your last ten posts. Healthy brands typically see 1–3% on Facebook, 3–6% on Instagram, and anything above 2% on LinkedIn is genuinely impressive for B2B.
UK benchmarks by sector: Retail and hospitality often run hotter — 4%+ on Instagram isn't rare for food brands. Financial and professional services tend to sit lower, so don't panic below 1.5% on LinkedIn. If you're under 0.5% across the board, that's a weak pulse.
The remedy: Stop broadcasting, start conversing. Ask questions, run polls, reply to comments within hours. Engagement is a two-way heartbeat — if you're not listening, it flatlines.
Vital Sign Two: Response Time
The reading: How long does it take your team to reply to a DM or comment? Meta's own data suggests UK consumers expect a response within an hour on social — and 40% will take their custom elsewhere if ignored.
The remedy: Set up saved replies, assign ownership, and if you can't staff evenings and weekends, say so in your auto-response. Silence reads as indifference.
Vital Sign Three: Content Consistency
The reading: Look at your grid or feed. Are there gaps of three weeks followed by a burst of five posts in a day? Erratic posting is the social equivalent of a skipping heartbeat.
The remedy: Build a four-week content calendar, batch-produce, and schedule. Aim for three to five quality posts a week rather than daily filler. Consistency beats volume every time.
Vital Sign Four: Follower Quality
The reading: A big number means nothing if it's built on bots. Check your follower-to-engagement ratio, look at follower locations (if you're a Manchester bakery with 60% of followers in Bengaluru, something's off), and audit recent followers for obvious fakes.
The remedy: Never buy followers — it's cosmetic surgery that leaves lasting damage. Run a targeted follower campaign, clean out obvious bot accounts, and focus growth on your actual catchment.
Vital Sign Five: Conversion Tracking
The reading: Can you trace a sale, enquiry or booking back to a specific post or ad? If your answer is "not really," you're diagnosing blindfolded.
The remedy: Install proper UTM tagging, connect Meta Pixel or LinkedIn Insight Tag, and set up GA4 conversion events. Within a fortnight you'll know which content pays its way and which is just decoration.
Vital Sign Six: Tone of Voice
The reading: Read your last ten captions aloud. Do they sound like a human, or like a press release that's been left out in the rain? UK audiences in particular have a finely tuned radar for corporate blandness.
The remedy: Write a one-page tone guide with real examples — words you'd use, words you'd never touch — and apply it everywhere. Warmth and specificity outperform jargon in every test we've run.
Vital Sign Seven: Crisis Readiness
The reading: If a complaint went viral at 9pm on a Sunday, who'd spot it, who'd respond, and who'd sign off the statement? If you had to think for more than five seconds, you're not ready.
The remedy: Draft a simple crisis protocol: monitoring alerts, a named responder, a holding statement template, and an escalation path. Rehearse it once a year, like a fire drill.
Your Results
Score yourself out of seven. Six or more healthy? Your pulse is strong — keep up the check-ups. Three to five? There's treatable underlying condition here. Fewer than three? Book a full audit before the condition becomes chronic.
Because in our experience, brands don't collapse overnight. They decline slowly, one ignored comment and one untracked campaign at a time. The good news: every one of these vital signs responds well to treatment.
